Basildon is an English new town located in south-east England a short distance outside greater London.
Basildon is the largest town in the Basildon District of the county of Essex.
It lies 25 miles east of Central London and 11 miles south of the city of Chelmsford. Nearby smaller towns are the smaller Billericay to the north, Wickford to the north-east and South Benfleet to the east of it. Basildon was originally created as a 'new town' after World War II in 1948. It was built to accommodate the London population overspill, from the conglomeration of four smaller existing villages, namely Pitsea, Laindon, Basildon and Vange. The new town took the name Basildon because it was the most central of the four villages that pre-existed it.
The local government district of Basildon was formed in 1974 and encapsulates a larger area than the town itself; the two neighbouring towns of Billericay and Wickford, as well as many smaller rural villages and smaller settlements are set among the surrounding countryside fall within its catchment area. Basildon Town is one of the most densely populated towns in the county. It is thought that Basildon's population will continue to fairly rapidly increase as many people are relocating to the town from elsewhere in Essex and from the nearby London area. This is mostly due to Basildon's booming economy, the town's service sector industries, and its proximity to central London.
Some of Basildon's residents do work in Central London due to the town being fairly well connected by road and rail to the City of London and the Docklands financial and corporate headquarters districts, with a 36-59 minute journey time from the three Basildon train stations to London Fenchurch Street.Basildon also has access to the City via the road network with both the A127 and A13 passing north and south of it.
People that hail from Basildon are known as Basildonians.
