Chelmsford, Essex is the principal settlement of the City of Chelmsford and is the county town of Essex, it is located in the South East of England. It is located in the London commuter belt and has a mainline railway service into London Liverpool St, it is also approximately 32 miles (51 km) north-east of London, and around 22 miles from the once provincial Roman capital at Colchester. The urban area of the modern city currently has a population of approximately 100,000, whilst the district has a population of 168,310, however this is known to be increasing on a year-on-year basis with many people both from Essex, London and the south-east re-locating to the city.

The main conurbation itself incorporates the geographical area of the former parishes of Broomfield, Great Baddow, Galleywood, Writtle, Moulsham, Widford and Springfield, including Springfield Barnes, now known as Chelmer Village.

The North American towns of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Chelmsford, Ontario, and Chelmsford, New Brunswick, are also named after the city.

Chelmsford's population consists of a large number of commuters to the City Of London, London West-end and Docklands areas, they are attracted by the 30–35 minute journey from Central London via the Great Eastern main railway line. The same journey by car takes approximately 60 minutes by road via the A12.

In 2012, the chairman of the Privy Council and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg (liberal leader), announced that the then town of Chelmsford, along with St Asaph, Wales, and Perth, Scotland, were all to be granted city status. The Letters Patent, from the Queen herself, then officially granted city status to Chelmsford.

Locals are known as "Chelmsfordians".
